Wildflower Engagement Session – Prince George BC

Anna & Colin’s engagement session took place near Prince George BC as the early summer wildflower season was in full bloom. We found an amazing location that had a field full of purple lupines, white daisies, orange and yellow hawkweeds, pink wild roses, and yellow buttercups – so we made sure to try and use them all. Here are some of our favourites from their session:

Erika & Jason’s Prince George BC Backyard Wedding

Erika & Jason came all the way from Calgary to get married in a beautiful backyard wedding in Erika’s hometown of Prince George BC. Their wedding was full of gorgeous details, soft romantic colours, and even a had a food truck with midnight snacks from the great wedding caterers at the White Goose Bistro. Their enchanting wedding ceremony took place in a small city park near their house, before a beautiful wedding reception in the backyard. The amazing decor throughout the wedding day was done by Heidi at Settings Events, while the bridal bouquet from Princess Flowers was one of the most beautiful bouquet’s we have ever seen. Here are some of our favourite photos from their wedding day:

Troy & Melissa’s Banff Wedding

Troy and Melissa were married at the beautiful Mount Norquay Resort, located in the Rocky Mountains above Banff Alberta. From the moment they contacted us a year and a half ago, we knew it would be an amazing wedding day and we were anxiously awaiting the trip. Melissa is from Prince George and Troy is from Australia. They fell in love while Melissa was teaching over there & decided to get married in one of the most beautiful places in the world – Banff, Alberta. Many of their family and friends from Australia came to Canada for the event and, for some it was their first time here.

We stayed with the wedding party and many of the guests at the Hidden Ridge Resort. What an amazing location nestled in the Rocky Mountains, just a few minutes from downtown Banff. On our way to the Resort we took a wrong turn, which was very fortunate since we came across the perfect location for their first-look session – a long stairway in front of an amazing rock wall.

After Melissa & Troy had their first look session, we met up with the Bridal Party at the Fenland Trail near the Vermillion Lakes. It was a perfect location for photos – with a clear mountain stream and lots of large spruce trees to provide some protection from the rain. If you go there, be sure to bring some bug spray as the mosquitoes were pretty intense.

Before long, it was time to head up Mount Norquay for the wedding ceremony. As we made our way up the hill the skies began to clear off. We pulled over at the Mount Norquay Lookout for a few more photos to take advantage of the scenic lookout above the town of Banff… some of our favourite photos of the day. What an amazing view of the town and the entire valley below!

Their wedding ceremony was originally planned for the balcony at the lodge, but with all the rain it had to be moved indoors. Still a beautiful place for a wedding – the lodge is beautiful with lots of natural light and the food was fantastic. Such an amazing day with so many great memories. Here are some of our favourite photos from Melissa & Troy’s Banff Wedding Day. (Make sure you scroll all the way down – you don’t want to miss their “Day-After Photo Session” at the stunning Moraine Lake!)

The next day we headed out for an After Wedding Session at Moraine Lake near Lake Louise. It is one of the most spectacular and scenic locations in the Rocky Mountains, and we really wanted to take some wedding photos there. We didn’t have time on the wedding day since it’s a bit of a drive from Banff, so the best option was an after wedding photo session. There was quite an audience with the tourist cameras going off all around us, so we moved down to a quieter location, which was the perfect spot to take advantage of the amazing blue water as a background. There was even a bit of a wind to catch the veil. It was so much fun, and we can’t wait until our next after wedding session. Here are some of our favourites.

Winter Wedding Tips

Here are some tips for couples who are thinking of having a winter wedding – or if you are a photographer hired for one. They should help to make the day more comfortable & to ensure you get lots of great photos. We learned some valuable lessons during a January winter wedding we photographed in Prince George, BC. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day with a fresh snowfall just in time for the wedding, but the week before it was a slushy mess. Looking back on the day there were a quite a few things that helped make it a success, inspiring us to write this blog post to share some of the tips & planning that may help you to have a beautiful winter wedding day of your own!

Winter Wedding Tips For the Bride & Groom: First Look Session

  • Our bride’s wedding dress was  the perfect length… It was an inch above ground level, and did not have a train. If it was any longer it would have been dragging in the snow and could have gotten wet, dirty, or icy before the ceremony & reception. It also had pockets!
  • Depending on the temperature,  the bride might even want to wear pants & boots under her dress, and the groom may consider a second layer as well (they can always change out of them once things head back indoors).
  • A fur capelet and gloves are also great additions to help keep the bride warm.
  • The bride & groom can each bring a large winter coat to wear between photos for a quick warm up if they start to get cold (but be careful of the veil when the bride takes her coat off and on).
  • Don’t forget to get something for your bridesmaids to wear… Colette chose cute matching sweater-knit shawls. Long dresses also help a bit to keep the cold wind away.
  • Leave lots of buffer room in the timeline, as travelling on winter roads can take longer, and even walking in the snow is a bit slower than usual.
  • Consider having a First Look session – in the winter, it gets dark very early. With the timing of their 4:00pm wedding ceremony it was completely dark by the time the ceremony was over. Since they wanted some beautiful outdoor winter wedding photos, the best option was to have a first look session. And when talking to the couple after the wedding they were both very happy they chose to do one.

Winter Wedding Tips For the Photographers:

Bridesmaids in Winter Wedding, Prince George, B.C.

  • It may be a good idea to wear snowpants & winter boots- Dan wore his snowpants and was able to go off the trail without worrying how deep the snow was, and could kneel down if needed.
  • Make sure to go indoors at least half an hour before the ceremony so your camera’s can warm up – our lenses fogged up as soon as we got inside. Luckily the ceremony didn’t start right away or it could have been trouble.
  • Pre-planning goes a long way – especially in the winter. Plan out the shots and locations you want to get done ahead of time, so you can move through them quickly so everyone can get back to the vehicles where it’s warm.
  • Plan a backup location (or two) in case of bad weather. Things worked out perfectly for us on this day – we even got a nice snowfall the night before. But we did have a few locations in mind in case the weather turned bad on the wedding day.

Colette & Kevin’s Winter Wonderland Wedding – Prince George BC

Kevin & Colette were married on a chilly but beautiful January day in Prince George BC. There was a fresh snowfall the day before the wedding (perfect timing & a big relief after the slushy messy the week prior!). As we were driving up to the forest that morning, we were amazed at what a stunning winter wonderland it was. The background of clear blue sky and white tipped trees was the perfect setting for their First Look Session. At their First Look session, we did some couple portraits and we could see Kevin & Colette were bursting with so much happiness and love!

Before long it was time for the bridal party to join us for a few photos, and then it was back to the Prince George Civic Centre for the ceremony. The ceremony backdrop was designed by Colette’s longtime friend from Art Knapp’s Plantland. It looked amazing and fit perfectly with their winter theme. And we gotta love a groom that runs out to buy lower wattage bulbs when he sees they are a bit too bright at the ceremony rehearsal.

The ceremony was short but emotional – they wrote their own vows which had everyone laughing and crying. From there everyone headed upstairs for cocktail hour. Since all the formal photos were completed before the ceremony they had lots of time to mingle with their family & friends while dinner was being prepared. As with the rest of the day the speeches were emotional & happy.

Going through the photos you could really see the love their family & friends have for them. Small weddings are so amazing and provide a great opportunity to get to know everyone who is there, see their relationship to newlyweds, while also allowing more time for the bride & groom to chat with every guest.

Here are some of our favorite photos taken throughout their wedding day…
